So it is not long until I start my ramble ’round Wales! Less than a week in fact. Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! I am excited… aaand bricking my pants in equal measure.
I made the definite decision to walk over 1000 miles around the perimeter of Wales approx. a month and a half ago, but it’s been on my mind for a few years. The reason I’m deciding to do this now is because I wanted to change things up a bit, I was in a work environment that was making me really unhappy and decided that enough was enough! I realised I have to do the things in life that make me happy to actually be alive, things that give me energy and drive.
I have been living in the Netherlands the last year and a half with my lovely partner, Arthur, and whilst the Netherlands is nice, I have been really missing the wild countryside of my home… some serious Hiraeth going on. Walking around the picturesque perimeter of Wales this summer not only allows me to immerse myself in the countryside I so crave, but it also means I’ll get to see more of my family and friends. Whilst walking, I’ll be collecting stories, as I later want to try and capture these stories in songs and music, basically as a project to try and preserve our modern (and not so modern) folk stories and culture!
Since this decision, I have been doing a lot of research! I’ve done lots of camping and walking in the past, but never quite like this. I’ve been watching all of the Youtube reviews on gear, been looking up tips on wild camping and reading blog posts from others who have embarked on similar adventures – all to prepare myself. I have packed and repacked my backpack many times (and it’s probably still too heavy), I’ve been trying to soothe my inflamed lower back, and have been pouring over route maps. Other than to work on my fitness a little more, no more time could prepare me better than I feel I already am. And of course, nothing will make me realise just what it’s going to be like and what I’m going to need more than to just start walking and see as I go along!
I was generously given a £300 grant by the Jeremy Willson Charitable Trust which really helped to offset some gear costs, including my tent, my camping cooking facilities, sleeping arrangements etc, which I am super appreciative for!
I got very excited yesterday, when me and my Mum went for a walk to a local part of the WCP (Wales Coast Path). The weather was incredible and we even saw 5 dolphins playing just off the coast! It was uh-mazing and it made me itching to get started – I just know I’m going to see so many beautiful places and wildlife along the way, even if the weather isn’t always quite as nice as it was yesterday…
I’ve decided to raise money for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust as I walk around Wales; a wonderful charity that is close to my heart!
There are a few reasons I have chosen to raise money for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust: Bees are so, so important, and with the use of pesticides and loss of natural habitat, humans are really decimating their numbers and causing bees a lot of harm. Bottom line, humans suck and we NEED these little critters to fertilise plants – without bees in this world, humans would not survive for very long and the richness and diversity our world currently has will be lost. Another reason is I just love bumblebees – they are fluffy and cute and I love them. This charity do such amazing work in Wales and throughout the rest of the UK, such as working with organic dairy farmers to help them make their land more bee friendly, and creating green spaces in communities for bees to thrive. I reaaaaally care about the environment and our planet (and so should you!).
You can donate to this amazing cause via my fundraising link. Please donate if you are able!
If you want to contact me about anything, use the contact page on the blog, and I’ll get back to you ASAP! Please bear in mind I will be walking with very little phone signal/battery/internet so it may take me a little while 😀 Let me know if there’s anything you’d love to see me write another post about too.
Well, that’s all I can think of to say for now, you’ll hear from me soon! Wish me luck!!!
